THE
VILLAGE OF PORTARIA - OUR HOME
|
The
mountainous village of Portaria, where we are located, is
one of the most famous villages in all of Pelion.
It is just 13km from the city of Volos, though it is at
an altitude of 650m. This makes it ideal an ideal starting
point from which to explore all of Pelion.
With
easy access to both the other mountain villages scattered
around Mount Pelion, as well as the coastal village, Portaria
is able to offer it's visitors a very practicle location
in which to stay.
|
|
The
famous Pelion ski centre of Agriolefkes is just a short
distance away from Portaria, and during the winter months,
many visitors to this area always stay in villages such
as ours, due to the ease of reaching the ski centre, which
is just 12km away.

There
are several churches in Portaria, and one in particular holds
great importance to our village as it is where the village name
is taken from.
This
is the Chapel of "Panagias tis Portareas". Inside the
chapel you can admire the stunning frescoes and icons that are
to be found there.
Around
Portaria, there are several stone paths that take you on lovely
walks amongst the green natural areas of the village.
You
can find complete peace and relaxation during your walk, and stop
at one of the many fresh water springs for a quick drink, before
you continue your adventure around the area.
|
Around
Portaria, and especially in the main square of the village, you
will find a great selection of places to have a meal or a drink.
There are also some nice small shops from which you can find yourself
a gift or souvenier of the area. |
During
the year, there are several Cultural Activities that take place
in our village. Probably the most well-known one are the International
Dance Festivals that take place during the months of July and
August.
Also
at the end of August, there is a revival of a traditional Pelion
wedding, where you can join in and experience the warmth and hospitality
that a Pelion style wedding offers.
During
the Autumn, there is also the event called the "Ascent Of
Portaria", which is organised by the Car Club of Volos.
Everybody is welcome to take part in these events, and we are
sure you will enjoy the experience that only these types of festivities
and events can bring.

|
Also
worth a visit in Portaria are the ruins of the hotel "Theoxenia".
This hotel was considered one of the most luxurious hotels in all
of the Balkans. Sadly however, it was destroyed during the German
occupation of Greece in World War 2. However, by taking a walk amongst
the ruins, it is possible to imagine how this hotel looked in it's
prime and the kind of luxury that was on offer, as well as the stunning
location that it was build on. |
